Distinguishing Fantasy from Reality: The Valentino Haute Couture Catwalk Show

The Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2019 runway show was the most magical 'performance' of the year, as well as the highlight of Paris Fashion Week.

This is completely out of the norm for me as I'm not usually interested in big gowns and eccentric fashion however this was not just either of those things. Celine Dion has every right to tell Pierpaolo Piccoli that he had 'given women back their beauty' because, with this show, that is exactly what he did. There was a dominating and empowering ambience in his creations, the idea that through fashion, we can overwhelm ourselves positively with art and make natural beauty even more beautiful - if that's even possible. As Vogue stated; 'The collection was indeed transportingly beautiful, a triumph of audacious colour, flawless workmanship, and bravura statements for night leavened with glamorous and insouciant real-life propositions for day', and I couldn't have described it better myself hence why I inserted that quote in this post.

Something significant about the show that made my heart flutter was the diversity amongst the models - although there was a lack in sizing, which is only traditional for a classic brand like Valentino and may cause unrest among some - the variety of models (featuring one of my favourites Adut Akech) perfectly accentuated the alluring designs they floated down the runway in. Anyone present at the show was in true and present magic at its finest, created through Piccoli's innovative mind and determination to construct an extraordinary, fantastical wonderworld.

Despite Piccoli's free spirit creations, he still manages to maintain (magically perhaps) the common feature of femininity, lightness and uniqueness that makes the perfect couture gown. No one except the models, stylists and designer knows the weight of these gowns however it's not hard to interpret from an admirer's perspective that there was definitely an airiness to them, enabling the models to glide so effortlessly. Furthermore, the tones and colours practically screamed SPRING in your face, another poignant feature of this whole display that really helped to blend the idealistic fashion-fusion for the upcoming season.

To say I was awe-stricken by Piccoli's exhibition is an understatement. It has sprouted a new love, desire and open-mindedness for fashion, especially couture, that I may have lost during our current gloomy season (definitely caught a bad case of the January blues) but this has set me on the right track!

I have chosen to include some of what I thought to be the most beautiful designs and shots from the show, all courtesy of Vogue Online and will also leave the link for those who would appreciate reading another writers interpretation of the show - I highly suggest reading it also, not only was it beautifully written but beyond accurate.
